Navy gift history in Fairfield, Alabama began with the donation of a warship to the city by Commodore John D. Morgan in 1892. The city's first navy ship, USS Constitution, was launched on November 1, 1893. The USS Constitution served as the flagship of the Alabama Naval Militia from 1898-1902. In 1903, Fairfield became a town and USS Constitution was decommissioned and donated to the town as part of the deal. USS Constitution was used as a training ship for localale naval recruits until it was sold to China in 1945 and scrapped.
Fairfield is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Fairfield is located on the north side of the Accra-Tuscaloosa National Pike and its ZIP code is 35205. The first settler in what is now Fairfield was James A. McMillin who arrived in 1819. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Tallapoosa River and named it "McMillan's Ferry." In 1829, John Sibley set up his farm here and named it "Emmonsville" after himself and his wife Emmons (nee Shields). In 1836, Alexander Robertson settled here with his family. They renamed their farm "Robertson's Ferry". In 1849, David Withers moved to Fairfield from Mobile with his family. He founded the cotton gin along Asbury Road about two miles west of today's fairgrounds where he processed raw cotton for export to Liverpool, England. Withers' gin became one of the most important mills in Alabama during this time period producing high quality cotton goods for local consumers as well as export sales. In 1865, Jno Cone bought Robertsons Ferry from David Withers and continued operations as a dry goods store until 1886 when he purchased land adjoining present day Fairfields limits south of US-190 and built a large mill that continues to operate to this day known as Cone & Sons Mill Complex #1 or simply "Cone Mill". From 1886 until 1912, Fairfields boundaries were bordered by I-10 east; US-190 south; White Street west; and post office property line north which included much of present day Brush Prairie Drive including much of today's fairgrounds property lines before being annexed by Fairfield Township in 1912. Today you can still see some evidence of this early history including an old corn crib still standing near I-10 eastboundExit 97A just outside present day Perkins Creek Rd./Fairfax Dr., upstream from current home site used by Church Road Evangelistic Fellowship educational ministries since at least 1964 . The importance of cotton production withinFairfield cannot be overemphasized given that over sixty percent (66%)of all UMDFA crop acres were grown in Alabama between 1907-2010! Machine harvesting techniques developed during World War II allowed farmers to increase yields while reducing inputs such as hands labor necessary for prior years operations such as hoeing or planting seeds etc.; thus resulting in increased profits for those farmers who could use modern equipment

Fairfield was a small, rural community in the early part of the 20th century. When Alabama became a state in 1907, it included much of what is now Fairfield County. The population of the community was only around 100 people, and by 1920 it had shrunk to just 10 residents. Despite its small size, Fairfield experienced significant growth in the years following World War I. In 1919, for example, the local bank - which had been started in 1892 - merged with another bank in nearby Decatur to form a new company called First National Bank of Alabama. This new company quickly made an impact within the community, helping to increase economic development and ensuing social progressivism. A similar trend occurred during Prohibition (1921- 1933). As alcohol became more popular and available statewide, businesses began to proliferate throughout Fairfield - including breweries and other liquor stores. This newfound prosperity helped spur development within the town as well as across much of central Alabama during this time period. disparities between rich and poor continued to exist throughout this era; however,Fairfield managed to stay largely unaffected by these dynamics despite experiencing significant growth nonetheless. In fact, until recently there were still few public housing projects or any major changes at all when it comes to demographics or socioeconomic status within the town itself (although some recent gentrification efforts have begun)). This stability has come about primarily due to strong local leadership over time - from Mayor Harry Durenberger through his successors into today's day-to-day management team at city hall - who have steadfastly refusedenance any type of outside interference or change on behalf of their constituents whatsoever. This fact has led many people living within Fairfield today to credit Mayor Durenberger with having essentially preserved their unique sense of culture and identity while also ensuring that they continue receive excellent services from government officials at all levels..
The area that is now Fairfield, Alabama was first settled by the Creek Indians in the early 1800s. In 1818, James Bowie and his party of Cherokees forced their way through the Indian Territory and invaded Alabama, burning all of its villages before reaching Fairfield. The resulting fur trade boom in central Alabama soon attracted settlers, and by 1830 there were over 100 houses in Fairfield. The town was named for General James H. Fairfield, who had helped expel the Creeks from central Alabama in 1825.
