The Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1892. The first fire truck was a Model A Ford with a horse-drawn engine. In 1912, the department purchased its first engine, a 2-story Ford with an air pump. The department's first station was on FM 515 east of downtown Fairfield. In 1916, the department bought its first truck and began using it for special purposes such as carrying water to firefighters fighting fires in other parts of the county. In 1922, the department acquired its first ladder truck which was used to reach high places on hills for putting out fires. In 1945, theFairfield Volunteer Fire Department became an all volunteer organization and began using jets for pumping water from streams into vehicle ditches. In 1979, the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department received its first automatic sprinkler system which allowed firefighters to more quickly control large fires while they waited for backup services.
It was a little after two in the morning when I left my house in Fairfield, Alabama and drove out to the cotton fields. It was a beautiful day, but not too bright or clear. As I drove, I could see the smoke rising from several of the large plantations down in Mobile County. This was seen as bad news by many people in Fairfield because it meant that there were more slaves working on those plantations than ever before. As I got closer to the plantation, I could see some very excited faces on the landing below where the workers brought in the cotton. Some of them were singing and shouting slogans while others played music on their fiddles or guitars. The smell of frying bacon announced that breakfast would be soon served up. I arrived at the plantation just as work began. There were already quite a few people here, all with their arms loaded down with sacks of cotton which they had to carry up to their houses for storage or sale. Then again, this is usually done during harvest time when most farms are very busy and there is not much time for anything else other than work. Work didn’t stop until sunset; then everyone went home for dinner and bedtime stories about what happened during their day at work or how things are going at home now that school is over for the year. It’s always been an enjoyable experience driving through these cotton fields – it’s like visiting another world altogether!

Fairfield is a small town in the Alabama Hills region of central Alabama. The population was 1,704 at the 2010 census. natives of Fairfield are called "Fairsiders". The first known resident of Fairfield was John Fenton, who came to what is now Fairfield in 1814 from Huntsville, Ala. Fenton built himself a cabin and raised crops. A post office was established in 1836, and by 1840, there were twenty-four residents living in Fairfield. The first store opened in 1848, and soon afterward the town began building houses. In 1853, a school was erected on the site of present day Fairhill Elementary School; it operated until 1915. In 1895, the community acquired its own water supply when Clearwater Dam became operational downstream from town limits. One of the most significant events in earlyFairfield history occurred on July 4th, 1907 when an all-night meeting of the Citizens' Council was held to discuss plans for a new high school that would serve as a replacement for Fort Lewis High School which had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. After much discussion and searching for an appropriate site within town limits (the original high school had been located just east of downtown), it was decided to build a new high school on land east of Main Street between West Lake Drive and East Oak Drive - this location would eventually become home to present day Bowie High School. With more than one thousand citizens attending what is considered to be its first fair with live music (a barn dance), fireworks displays and wagon rides served as part of festivities which took place throughoutmuchofAlabamaonthat date; many local businesses participated including J C Meyers Hardware & Millinery where customers could buy fresh produce or make baskets while enjoying refreshmentsservedbythecrowds outdoorsbeforereturningtotheirhomevenues lateintheafternoon .
