Eufaula is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. Eufaula has been called "The cultural and commercial capital of the Upper Mobile Valley" because it has been a center for education and industry since the early 19th century. In 1902 Eufaula became one of the first towns to be established in what would become Mobile County, Alabama. The town's historical nucleus is located on Old Hwy 29 between US 80 and FM 1755 east of downtown which served as an open-air market from 1825 to 1865; during that time it was known as "Old Market Square". A new market/town square was built in 1892 and named Market Square Drive after John Fenton Woolridge, founder of Fenton Drugs Company which later merged with Jardine & Ellersleeve Corporation; this area now includes most of downtown Eufaula. In 1915 Eufaula became one of eight cities in Mobile County when it was created from parts of four other counties by Governor James Allred; the others were: Port Adair (now Fairhope), Tuskegee, Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham. At that time there were only six white men living in Mobile County—the other five being African Americans who had come toMobile from large slave populations brought over by American colonists along with their slaves. Most black residents worked as domestic servants or field hands while white residents did all sorts of light industrial jobs such as manufacturing goods or transportation equipment until World War II when many whites relocated to relocation centers throughout Southeast Alabama due to hate crimes against blacks committed by segregationists across all levels of society. In 1940 Eufaula consolidated with neighboring unincorporated communities Chilton and Pickensville making up what would become known as Tuscaloosa City Limits; however some residents still refer to themselves as Eufaulaians or simply "Tuscaloosans."
