Eufaula is a small town in the U.S. state of Alabama, located on the bank of the Mobile River. It is known for its sweet potatoes and white oak trees, as well as its annual cotton festival. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Eufaula were French traders in 1692, who named it "Auberge des Canadiens" (Hospitality House). A post office was established in 1796 and became part of Mobile County. The town came into being when a group of farmers pooled their resources to purchase land from John Hume and others in 1818. In 1819, Eufaula reported a population of 100 residents; by 1840 it had grown to 350 residents with a school and store. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson visited Mobile Bay and saw an Indian point on the opposite side of the bay where some people claimed they had seen "the most beautiful girl in America". He ordered military forces to burn down any structures that were found there – this included the old trading post – which drove settlers out of Eufaula and other nearby townships for several years. When Jackson moved his command headquarters from Athens, Georgia to Mound City, Missouri during his campaign for president in 1844, he left behind two barrels of hard cider stored at Eufaula's storeroom; this undefended storage helped contribute to Confederate victory over Union forces at Fort Sumter three years later. Eufaula, Alabama is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,437 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name is derived from Eufaula Plantation which was located in what is now Eufaula. The area that became Eufaula was first settled by Paleo-Indian peoples who hunted and gathered plants near the Tensaw River. A mission called San Augustine de la Plata arrived there in 1796 and began to preach Christianity to Native Americans. In 1821, General David Coffee ordered Captain James Fannin to explore Mobile Bay and its potential for trade with Spanish Louisiana. Fannin landed at Eufaula on October 19, 1821 and established a trading post there withlocal chief Talavera as his partner. This led to the development of an agricultural center around Eufaula Creek where cotton plantations were founded beginning in 1823 by John Wilkinson & Sons Ltd.. The town reached its peak population around 1900 when it had over 10 churches and 1 school; however it declined after World War II due to lack of industrialization and other factors such as immigration which replaced white labor with black labor throughout much of the Deep South
In 1819, the town of Eufaula was founded by the brothers William and John Hargrave. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had commanded a brigade in the American Revolution. The Hargrave brothers are also responsible for developing what is now downtown Eufaula. In 1827, the town plat was filed with the Alabama Legislature and designated as the county seat of Throckmorton County. Between 1829-1830, Eufaula became known as "The Athens of Alabama" because of its academic and scientific prominence in Alabama at that time. By 1830, however, due to rapid population growth and an increase in taxes levied on residents, Eufaula declined among other places inAlabama for lack of development opportunities. In 1834, it was announced that Throckmorton County would be dissolved and its citizens were given new counties to form within direct response to this trend; these new counties were Calloway (which included present day Birmingham) and Choctaw (including present day Mobile). In 1840-1841 respectively, two more towns were founded within Throckmorton County: Decatur (in Walker County) and Florence (in Jefferson County). These towns quickly outgrown their respective villages/quarters within Throckmorton County so they petitioned for statehood which finally happened on November 15th 1860 when Alabama became a state!
