On October 10th 1865, Major General James Hance replaced Major General Andrew Johnson as Commanding Officer of VIII Corps within Departmentof Tennessee during Reconstruction; accordingly, IX Corps took up residence within I Corps headquartered at Nashville during this time period which housed all African American troops stationed within Federally administered areas south of Memphis/Tullahoma/Nashville prior to their integration into white units upon Re-organization in 1946).
