The history of the Eufaula Air Force Base began in 1942 with the creation of the Army Air Forces at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The first unit activated was the 458th Bombardment Squadron, which flew P-51 Mustangs for training. In 1943, these planes were placed on alert to serve in the European Theatre of War. The squadron later moved to RAF Euston and began flying Spitfire fighter aircraft. In 1945, the Air Force consolidated all its air forces under one command at Eufaula AFB. With this organization came a new emblem and name: "EAF". The emblem represented all that was good and proud about America's military aviation program: strength, innovation, courage and determination. During World War II, Alabama played an important role in American arms production by manufacturing strategic bombers such as the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator; fighter aircraft like Lockheed P-38 Lightning; helicopters like Bellanca AH1 Cobra; armored cars like Ford Taurus; submarines such as USS Sperry (SSN 746) and USS Grumman TBF Avenger; artillery pieces including howitzers, mortars and tanks; ammunition trains including two locomotives called "Cotton Belt" – one carrying five million rounds of 155 mm rounds per day for use by artillerymen along with a mobile loader to move these rounds around battlefields quickly – while another hauled twelve million rounds of shells weekly from four rail yards near Mobile for use by antitank guns on German positions. In 1948 USAF Academy cadets founded their own air force squadron at EAFB - No 427th Fighter Squadron (4/27ths). This unit flew F3U Corsairs until 1958 when it transitioned to F9F Panther jets! After being equipped with Northrop A-12 Eagle fighters they became part of Tactical Air Command (TAC) during Vietnam! In 1990 they converted back to F9Fs after experiencing major problems with their Northrop Aircraft engines! They currently fly Boeing EA-18G Growlers! EAFB has been home to many memorable events over time most notably Operation Neptune's Spear which resulted in Kuwait becoming an independent country following World War 2 ended hostilities between USA & UK...Operation Desert Storm where coalition forces destroyed Saddam Hussein's regime... Operation Just Cause where invading Panama nation was overthrown...Operation Enduring Freedom WHERE coalition forces liberated Kabul Afghanistan from Taliban insurgents
