Enterprise, Alabama is a town in Clarke County, Alabama. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area. The name comes from an early settler and Ebenezer Mudgett, who platted what is now Enterprise on November 4, 1817. The first company to set up shop in Enterprise was the American Fur Company, which opened its doors in 1827. A few years later General John Cushing established cotton plantations here as well. By 1840 Enterprise had become a thriving community with over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents. In 1860 Confederate troops burned down the courthouse and most of the homes in Enterprise for refusing to take sides in the war against Great Britain. However, many local businessmen salvaged any property they could and reopened their businesses soon afterwards. During Reconstruction Enterprise prospered as a black business center with many African Americans working in local mills and factories during this time period. After the end of Reconstruction enterprise experienced some decline but has since bounced back several times since then becoming one of the fastest growing areas within Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area (CSA).
