Enterprise is a city in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The history of Enterprise dates back to 1831 when two men named Smith and Jones bought 640 acres of land on the east side of Mobile Bay from the Choctaw Nation for $5 per acre. In 1836, John Caudill founded Enterprise as a small community on these lands. This was an early example of a town founded by white settlers in what is now Alabama. From its inception, Enterprise served as an important transportation and commercial center for Bibb County and the Mobile-Tuscaloosa area. During Reconstruction, Enterprise experienced some growth and progress but also struggled with Reconstruction-era racism which affected not just business owners but also African Americans who were treated poorly by white society. By the late 1920s, however, enterprise had recovered somewhat due to new investment by local businessmen such as Wernher Huxley and Roy Barnes who brought modern technology to town while creating jobs for locals including many blacks working in their businesses. After World War II ended and agricultural production increased in areas adjacent to Enterprise along Mobile Bayou, development pressures increased around downtown where commercial properties were built up rapidlyaroundthe clock (the old downtown district still exists today). By 1860, Enterprise had a population of 3,000 people and it had three stores, a sawmill, five churches (one of which was dedicated to Baptist Christianity), two mills that produced flour and soap, four schools (two were operated by private individuals), three churches (including one which served as the local parish church), two hotels/inns, one store/barns/warehouse complex, one farmstead/village center with nine farms surrounding it, one ferry landing on the Mobile River connecting Enterprise with Spanish Fort on Bayou Teche
