The Coast Guard was formed on December 12th, 1796 as a result of the Continental Congress’s resolution that “the United States shall have a navy to protect their coasts and seas.” The first Coast Guard unit was founded at Hampton Roads, Virginia in 1807. By 1815, the Coast Guard had its own shipyard in New York City, where they built three frigates and two corvettes. After America declared war on England in1812, the Coast Guard began transporting troops and supplies up and down the East coast. In 1814, President James K. Polk authorized the construction of a new fleet of six ships called “Marine Corps Frigate Squadron One Hundred and Seventy-Eight” (later known as USS Constitution). The squadron would be divided into detachments and dispatched to various locations around North America during World War I. In 1933, Congress passed an act authorizing retirement of all U.S.-owned warships from service by June 1st, 1934. As a result, all remaining ships in service were decommissioned or mothballed until {date} 1975 when they were reactivated as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear which restored peace on our coasts after years of tumult during World War II. Today, one hundred fifty-six coast guard vessels are operating across America's oceans; providing security for coastal communities while also upholding maritime law and Order when needed most. Each vessel is manned by over 60 officers and sailors who share one common goal: To keep our nation safe by preserving our coastline and seas!
