In the late 1800s, in Dothan, Alabama, the National Guard was a vital part of the local community. The Guard was originally organized as a response to labor unrest in the area. It quickly became an important part of local life and culture. The first national guard unit in Dothan was raised on November 17, 1872. At that time, it consisted of eight men and six horses. The unit patrolled the streets and performed other assigned tasks. However, it wasn’t until 1875 that the Guard truly began its growth as a civic institution. That year, President Ulysses S. Grant ordered all United States military units to be disbanded and reorganized into state militia units underthe command of governors. This order created a need for an organization specifically designed to provide security for communities across America during peacetime periods such as wartime. On January 2nd, 1876, Governor John Witherspoon appointed Captain James Halsey to head up this new organization called the Alabama National Guard Bureau (ANIGB). Halsey soon proved himself to be an important leader within ANIGB and led the brigade through many years of success in providing public safety in Dothan and surrounding areas. In 1898, he also served as commander of troops at Fort Gibraltar during World War I. In 1949-1950, Captain George Shephard assumed command of ANIGB from Captains Alonzo Grier (1948-49) and Aubrey Beardsley (1949-50). Shephard led ANIGB through many years of transformation into today’s more than 250 man army garrisoned within multiple townships throughout Alabama including downtown Dothan with over 6 square miles available for use by the guardsmen!

The area around Dothan today was first settled during the 18th century by English settlers who arrived from North America as fur traders. Maintaining cultural ties with these earlier arrivals has helped contribute to its current Attitashiwee Indian tribe community membership and overall rural character. In addition to its agricultural economy, Dothan also relies heavily on service industries such as health care services and manufacturing. These sectors have contributed significantly both offensively and defensively over recent years; for example, many of DOTHAN's largest employers are not officially counted within the city limits but rather within neighboring Mobile or Tuskegee Counties which they share boundaries with.
