By 1830, it had become an important center for slave trading operations from nearby Mobile Bayou counties. The town experienced some economic setbacks during the Civil War but quickly recovered following its cessation. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Dothan experienced significant growth as cotton production declined and jobs were lost in industry throughout Alabama due to technological advances and automation technologies; however, it regained critical employment after 1990 when many new factories moved into the area because of new government incentives related to higher industrial productivity rates mandated by federal legislation known as "the New Deal." Dothan, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, located on the Mobile River east of Montgomery. The population was 606 at the 2010 census and 819 as of 2015. Dothan is home to the University of Alabama at Dothan and also to several smaller colleges and universities. The area that would become Dothan was first settled by African Americans in 1827. In 1881, white settlers moved into the area that now includes Dothan from what is now Montgomery. The town was named for General John Crain, who led Confederate forces during the American Civil War. At one time, it was one of several towns in Mobile County along with Fanninville and Cahaba Heights that were burned by Union troops after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865
