Dothan, Alabama is a small town in the southcentral part of Alabama. The population was 9,609 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Marshall County and it is also the county seat for Marshall County. Dothan is located on U.S. Route 11 between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, about 25 miles (40 km) south of downtown Birmingham and 50 miles (80 km) north of Tuscaloosa. The first European settlers in what became Dothan were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1665. The name "Dothan" was derived from the Creek word "dowa" meaning "water hole." A creek running through present-day Dothan served as a landing place for early white explorers when they explored what would later become Alabama during Spanish colonial times. The area that would become Dothan was settled by African Americans in 1821 when Captain John Lewis founded Lewisburg Plantation on land he acquired near present-day Mobile Bayou. By 1827, all slaves had been sold out to white men and many black families had moved away from Mobile to find new homes in what would become Marshall County. Dothan was founded by Scots-Irish colonists in 1819 as a small community named New Ross on the north side of Mobile Bay. The name "Dothan" means "place of plenty." The town's first store opened in 1825. Dothan grew rapidly during the antebellum period due to its location and access to cotton plantations, which made it an important commercial center for eastern Alabama. The cotton industry declined after the Civil War, but Dothan has continued to grow since then as a bedroom community for Montgomery County. The downtown area is home to several large brick buildings dating from the early 1800s that are remnants of Dothan's heyday as a commercial center and cultural center. One such building, built in 1827, is called the Federal courthouse and has been used as both a government office and court house since its inception. Other notable buildings include Stroud's Methodist church (1870), undertaker's office (1893), post office (1896), hotel (1902), fire station (1911), public library (1914), and revival meetinghouse (1920). Today, much of what makes up Dothan's historical legacy can be found within its walls: streets named for local figures or objects from local history; murals advertising local businesses or services; old cotton gin warehouses still standing; and plaques honoring local ancestors or participants in local events.
