In 1886 when Mobile won its first territorial state election as part of Reconstruction South Alabama came into being; Dothan residents enthusiastically participated in electing their new mayor who was later to become governor of Alabama under President Woodrow Wilson On October 2nd 1912 citizens elected J P French as their first black Mayor in history following successful integration efforts by Mrs French over many years prior to that date throughout much of south central Alabama including Dothan where she ran unsuccessfully for office on numerous occasions until her success finally brought national attention to her cause culminating with her election as Mayor effective November 3rd 1912
