Dothan, Alabama is a small town located in the Alabama Hills region of the United States. It was founded in 1871 by Anglo-American settlers and today has a population of around 10,000 people. The town is located on the west bank of the Cahaba River, about 25 miles southwest of Birmingham and 30 miles south of Mobile. The area that would become Dothan was first settled by Native Americans in the Late Prehistoric period. The Creek Nation purchased land in what is now Dothan from the British in 1763. The area was then part of Creek County, Alabama until it was transferred to Marshall County, Alabama in 1836. In 1871, Dothan was organized as a town under the name Ofalbana. Dothan’s history can be traced back to when Englishmen arrived in present-dayAlabama during the early 1800s looking for new land to settle. Many of these men decided to create a village on what would become today’s north side of town – along what is now Old Morningside Road – due to its fertile soil and easy access to water resources. By 1821, town residents had built their first frame home and begun trading with other settlements on the Cahaba River for goods and services. By 1830, however, most residents had moved away due to fears that their land might be taken over by white settlers who were seeking access to natural resources including timber and coal reserves within newly acquired territory from Mexico. In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg defeated Union General John Custer at Horseshoe Bend outside Chattanooga while leading his army into northwest Tennessee as part of an effort called “the great march” across America towards Richmond. This event led directly into 19th century Birmingham where many white Southerners relocated after being denied admittance into Yankee society based upon their race or ethnicity
Dothan was founded by the Creek people in 1814. The town was named for General Andrew Dothan, who fought in the Mexican-American War. Dothan grew rapidly during the 1800s as a center for cotton trade and manufacturing. The town became a major railroad junction in the early 1900s and experienced rapid growth after World War I. By the late 1940s, Dothan had become an agricultural center with large scale production of soybeans, corn, and other crops.
