The Coast Guard in Dothan, Alabama has been providing service to the local community since 1912. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect life and property on our coastline, seizing contraband and rescuing people who have fallen into danger. In fact, the Coast Guard was founded in 1912 as a response to the Spanish-American War. Since then, the Coast Guard has grown and changed in many ways. Today, they provide services both within our borders and beyond. They work with law enforcement to apprehend fugitives and save lives during coastal emergencies such as hurricanes or earthquakes. In 2013, Commander Rick Fitzgerald became the first Commandant of the Coast Guard District 9 in Dothan after spending more than 20 years Overall commanding a district that stretches from Mobile County southward along Pensacola Beach until Enterprisetown near Tallahassee. He succeeds Admiral Jeff Davis who retired effective July 1st, 2012 after serving as Commandant for 7 years (2002-2010). Commander Fitzgerald comes from a long line of service members who have dedicated their lives to safeguarding our coasts – his father served in World War II before becoming an admiral himself; his mother was also an enlisted member of the Coast Guards when he was born; both commanders were decorated for their heroism during Operation Neptune’s Spear which successfully thwarted an attack by Iraqi insurgents on USS Cole off Kuwait back on October 24th 1995 His wife Barbara is also currently a First Class Petty Officer 2nd Class stationed aboard USS Florida (LHA) . Their two sons are both also military servicemen – one is currently assigned as an Aviation Maintenance Technician Second Lieutenant at Naval Air Station Mayport, FL while another is currently enrolled at US Military Academy at West Point where he will become a Captain after completing his fouryears Commodore Rick Fitzgerald joins those honored prior with him by receiving his command promotion day/ night ceremonies ashore Tuesday morning at Naval Base Mayport followed by dinner with Corpsmen/Commandants from District Nine Headquarters ashore Wednesday night

In 1916, the Coast Guard Station at Mobile was moved to Dothan and renamed the Station #4. In 1951, Headquarters for the Coast Guard District of Alabama were transferred from Mobile to Dothan. On July 1, 1969, Headquarters for all of Gulf South Command were transferred from Fort Worth Texas to Dothan. Today, there are sixteen stations located throughout Alabama including one station located in Pensacola Florida which is part of Gulf South Command. The Service offers diversions and rescues as well as protection of our coastline and ports.

The Coast Guard has been keeping the seas safe since 1790. Today, they rely on gifts to keep their members safe and help them do their jobs. Gift history of the Coast Guard starts with the donation of a boat in 1790. The first Coast Guard vessel was built by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and donated to the state of New York. In 1847, Congress authorized the creation of a coast guard service within existing military forces and appropriated $5,000 for its development. In 1850, Congress created an Inspector General position within the Department of Commerce and Labor to oversee coast guard operations. The first gift from a private individual was given in 1861 when Captain John Sutter donated his tugboat SS Constitution to the Coast Guard as part of a bet between Sutter and Commodore Matthew Perry. In 1923, Congress authorized fundraising matches for construction of new ships and shore stations along America's coasts. By 1929, donations had reached $100 million per year! The maritime industry responded by giving generously throughout World War II (1939-1945). After the war ended, gifts continued to flow in support of coast guard operations through Operation Neptune's Spear (1948-1950), Project Mercury (1951-1957), Caribbean Relief (1959-1965), Cuban Missile Crisis Assistance Program (1966-1970), Panama Canal Zone Emergency Highway Communications System Grant Program (1972-1975), Laos Humanitarian Response Plan Aid Program 1978 Supplemental Appropriations Act - Publish No 9784(H) OTU 12775(A) The 1980s were dominated by gifts after President Reagan’s visit – USS President Reagan arrived at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island on April 5th 1981 with 1 tonneau full of humanitarian supplies including school children’s uniforms, sandwiches for Marines at Camp Pendleton in California; items such as kitchen appliances valued at over $25K were delivered gratis directly to local Marine barracksites across America; also during this time period gift baskets filled with everyday items such as toiletry items like razor blades or shampoo were sent anonymously to commandant units around America; finally upon Ronald Reagan’s departure from office an entire mess hallful of refreshments was delivered freeof charge directly to Commandant’s Quarters at Marine Barracks Quantico Virginia live chickens! Despite these recent trends towardsGiving back into society through means other than monetary donations no single person has made more contributions towards helping protect our coastline than Adm James Lister who served as Commandant/Director Maritime Security Operations Headquarters Atlantic Fleet from 1987 until his retirement in 2006 ADM Lister is considered one century HERO for all that he has done for our Nation's coastal security force!

Dothan, Alabama is a small town located in Marshall County, Alabama. It is the seat of Marshall County and was founded in 1836. Today, Dothan has a population of about 507 residents and it is the county's only incorporated municipality. The town was named for General Andrew Dothan who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Alabama from 1868 to 1870. Dothan began as a farmstead on the banks of the Coosa River. By 1858, it had become an important commercial center due to its location at the intersection of two major roadways connecting Mobile and Birmingham. In 1865, Dothan became one of four towns inMarshall County designated as "townships." The other three were Huntsville, Decatur and Pikeville. The first post office was opened in Dothan on December 12th, 1865 by Wm Hargrave with L A Lewis as his clerk. The first settlers arrived around 1836 and most likely built their homes before that time because there was no railroads or highways available in that area at that time. Many early pioneers were farmers who also operated grist mills which made flour for local bakeries and other products such as soap until automobiles became popular during World War I.. By 1860, much progress had been made within the community thanks to donations from citizens such as John Hargrave (founder of Huntsville), Mr. Folsom (founderof Decatur)and Judge J C Beattie (founderof Pikeville). Many local businesses managed by men like these continued until after World War II when women began managing many large businesses including several restaurants/cafeterias/bars along with many stores selling clothes, shoes etc., especially after WWII when cotton prices plummeted due to overproduction by American factories worldwide
Dothan was founded in 1819 by General Josiah Gregg. It became an important local center during the slave trade era and was the site of a number of early cotton plantations. The city's fortunes declined following the Civil War, but it has redeveloped since then.
