Decatur is a city in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. The motto of Decatur is "Unity through Diversity." The first settler in what would become Decatur was James Waddell in 1819. A school was started in 1826 and became known as the Academy of learning. When Jackson Purchase land was sold north of town in 1830, a new community called Jackson Landing sprang up near present-day Decatur on salt water Mobile Bay. In 1832,Decatur became an incorporated village when all of Tuscaloosa County was organized into cities by Act No. 5 of that year. In 1847, the Tennessee Central Railroad arrived through Decatur and began construction of its line from Chattanooga to Huntsville with stops at Putnam and Madison Counties east of town and west of Marengo Creek before reaching downtown Tuscaloosa on July 11th. On December 12th,1848 – just two weeks after the railroad had reached downtown –Decatur’s first store opened with Wm Hennepin as proprietor and Elisha Caldwell as cashier On January 1st 1850,Decatur incorporation as a city resulted from an act by the Alabama Legislature which repealedAct No 6 Of 1846 which had established the unincorporated Village form of government within City Limits only In March 1861 Confederate troops burned down part of Union Block House here during what became known as “the Battle for Beale Street” later renamed Spring Hill Drive today
Decatur was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1817 as a small town on the Chattahoochee River. It grew rapidly, becoming a major cotton center in the antebellum period. The city became an important transportation hub for cotton and other crops, and also played an important role in the development of Alabama politics and culture. In 1861, Confederate forces burned Decatur to the ground; the destroyed town never recovered.
