The Decatur Police Department has been providing services to the community since 1881. The department is one of the oldest in Alabama and has a rich history that can be traced back to its early days as a Volunteer Fire Department. In 1865, the Decatur City Council voted to form a police department and named it the Decatur Police Department. The first officers were hired on October 1, 1871. The department was initially housed in what is now the police headquarters building. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1895, but was soon replaced with a new structure that still stands today. In 1951, the department changed its name to the present day Decatur Police Department. At that time, it became part of city government and began receiving funding from county government through Combined District Services programs. On December 15, 1984, combined county and city government merged into one entity under mayor Harry Garrison's leadership and control within city limits; this change solidified the relationship between city hall and law enforcement within city boundaries for all eternity.
