Decatur, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 31,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Decatur River in Marshall County between Mobile and Montgomery counties, about 25 miles (40 km) south-southwest of Birmingham and 30 miles (48 km) north-northwest of Montgomery. The Arkansas Railroad completed a line from Decatur toMobile in 1881, making it possible for settlers to travel to those two cities without having to go through Montgomery or Birmingham. The first white settler in what is now Decatur was James Crain who arrived on July 1, 1822 with his family from Kentucky. In 1826 he married Anna Maria McNaught, daughter of Major General John McNaught who had been commandant at Fort Pillow during the Indian War. In 1828 Nathaniel McMillan moved from Huntsville to purchase land on which he built a log cabin that became known as "McMillan's Station". A post office was established at this location on December 7, 1830 under the name "Millsboro". Later that year McMillan sold his interest in mill operations to Simeon Baird and David Lyle Wilkinson and began building a gristmill that would produce flour for local markets until it was destroyed by fire in 1854. In December 1861 Confederate forces burned down part of downtown Atlanta while burning papers belonging to Mayor James Wofford and other civic officials during their raid upon Atlanta before their attemptation to move westward towards Mobile Bay AFP headquarters near Marietta Junction; some speculate this attack may have been retribution for Union raids into southern Alabama preceding that date which had also caused widespread destruction throughout much of ruralAlabama; however no evidence exists demonstrating such an actudity Many people believed then Governor Robert E Moore ordered Confederate forces pursuant thereto after learning about Washington's Raid against Mobile Bay Headquarters Because cotton could not be grown without irrigation systems New plantations were started up mostly around town where water got trucked in from creeks or rivers
On December 1, 1816, the first permanent white settler in Decatur was James Robertson. He and his family were the first European settlers in what is now Alabama. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson made a land grant to Colonel John C. Moore of Mobile for the establishment of a town on the Alabama River. The town was named Decatur after General Jackson. In 1837, Chief Justice John Marshall decided that Mobile should be part of Congress because its location on the Gulf of Mexico made it an important seaport for commerce and navigation. This decision led to increased development in Mobile because it became one of America's leading commercial ports.
