In 1835, a group of men led by Andrew Johnson built a log cabin on what is now US 421 near present-day Decatur Boulevard/Alabama State Route 22. The town started to grow rapidly due to natural resources such as timber and coal that were available in those days near Mobile Bayou; soon there were stores, hotels, churches and schools as well as homes for slaveowners and their slaves. In addition to cotton cultivation there were also pasturelands used for corn farming until recently when development has resumed there with some expansion into areas closer to downtown including new subdivisions west of Monroe Road/Alabama State Route 14th Street extending into Birmingham while east side streets are being developed towards Interstate 65/US 72nd Avenue with plans to have an expressway running through it connecting both communities together making it possible for shoppers within minutes' drive from either one or the other shopping area without going outside either city limits
