Decatur is a city in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 25,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. General Motors Co., a major American automaker headquartered in Flint, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit), moved its main plant from Flint to Decatur in 1931 and began production there of models such as Buick and GMC automobiles. In 1957, the company relocated its headquarters to Marysville, Ohio after it announced plans to build a new factory there. Chevrolet also established an operations center in Decatur in 1969 before moving its manufacturing facilities back to Flint following the bankruptcy of GM. The economic decline of Flint led to layoffs in Decatur and other communities east of Detroit beginning around 2000; however, no plants were closed outright until 2006 when General Motors announced it would close two-thirds of its global assets due to falling sales within North America and worldwide slowed demand for automotive products overall. The closure of two-thirds of General Motors' global assets spelled trouble for many smaller automakers who could not keep up with their larger competitors - but they had one more shot at salvation thanks to Barack Obama's Auto bailout program which gave them nearly $10 billion dollars for retooling and expanding plants all over America including into "the Rust Belt". This saved Chrysler Group from insolvency and allowed it to reopen three plants (Chrysler Dodge Ram) that closed during the Great Recession while Isuzu Motors went bankrupt amidst allegations thatilial abuse against employees had taken place inside their Decatur plant from 2007-2013
