Decatur is an Alabama city of over 100,000 people and the county seat of Decatur County. It was founded in 1835 by General James Wilkinson and named for him. The city is located on theDecatur River, east of Birmingham and west of Montgomery. In 1902, it became one of the twenty-eight cities in Alabama to become a state capital. The current mayor is Tommy Battle. The early history of Decatur includes its location on the Decatur River and its role as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1835, General James Wilkinson established a town here after he was ordered to move his army from Mobile to take possession of what then was known as West Alabama following a war with Georgia. Wilkinson decided to call his new community "Decatur" after his old home near London, England. By 1850, there were over 1,500 residents in Decaturtowne – all white men – contributing towards its growth during the antebellum period. In 1881, Decatur became part of Montgomery County when that county was created from parts of circuit court districts 2 and 3 including most of Birmingham City limits northward to Auburn Lake and southward to Marvellous Valley Creek (now known as Warrior Valley). At this time black people were not allowed municipalities within Montgomery County although they had been allowed within other counties since before Reconstruction (1868–1870). AsAlabama began experiencing rapid population growth during this era due largely to cotton production across much of the Deep South, members from both major political parties worked diligently together to try and resolve these issues creating an increasingly inclusive county government which eventually included black majority municipalities throughout most southern Alabama by 1910 When Montgomery County annexed Baldwin County in 1923 it did so without any black residents living therein making Baldwin an exception among many southern counties which have not annexed since then; though some have done so such as Cullman which has annexation rights for Marion County specifically because it lies within their borders
