Daphne, Alabama is a small town in the lower Mobile County area of south Alabama. It was founded by slaveholders in 1818 as part of a plantation called "Tuscaloosa". The town became an industrial center after the opening of the Mobile Bay Bridge in 1932. Daphne's population peaked at 25,000 during the early 21st century, but has since declined to about 10,000. The town is now largely rural with a few businesses operating out of local churches and schools. The town was originally named for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was known as "Pleasant Gap" until 1830 when it changed its name to "Daphne". The first settler in Daphne was James Fenton who arrived from Kentucky in 1819. He leased two thousand acres (800 ha) from John Wilkinson on December 3, 1821. Fenton built his home on what is now US-61 near present day Daphne High School and began operations as a cotton gin and store. He also developed land for farming which he later sold to Colburn brothers Elijah and Ebenezer Welles. In 1830 Fenton married Martha Reeves who had come from Tuscaloosa with her sister Lucy six years earlier. They moved into their own house on land that they would later subdivide into five lots (later renamed Streetsboro). They were joined by other pioneers including Isaac Hogg who arrived in 1824, George Whitehead in 1830, Lewis Alcorn in 1835, Samuel Smith in 1840 and Daniel Boone around 1850-60. By 1860 there were only four families living within the limits of present day Daphne: James Fenton Jr., Martha Reeves Fenton (Martha II), Isaac Hogg Sr., Lewis Alcorn Jr.. All but one of these individuals died before 1870 when their property was taken over by the United States government through condemnation proceedings following the American Civil War which ended with slavery being abolished across America via General Sherman's March 8th proclamation ending all civil rights for African Americans statewide except education within white districts subject to special clause allowing Negro citizens access to education provided they exhibited good moral character & demonstrated ability & hard work
