Daphne is a small town in Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1871 by the merger of two small villages, Daphnephrae and Dysart. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Daphne is located about 31 miles (51 km) northwest of Birmingham and just east of Tuscaloosa. Daphne's ZIP code is 35601. The community is named for the goddess Daphne, who according to legend was a beautiful princess who could turn her head into a laurel wreath or shoot an arrow with feathers that whistled like birds. A local farmstead still grows onions and other vegetables on their land today because they were able to grow these crops without chemicals until 1974 when the area became part of Birmingham Municipal Airport. The first post office in Daphne opened on October 12, 1871. The present post office building was built in 1922 and replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire during World War II. The first post office in Daphne was established in 1858, but it only served residents of neighboring Phenix City. In 1865, the first school opened in Daphne and remained open until 1975. In 1880, developers started construction on a large cotton plantation near present-day Daphne and soon began to sell land for development around it. By 1900, over 60% of the town's population had grown up within its boundaries. By 1910, over 90% of all retail sales in Daphne took place within one mile of either I-10 or US 71A (the main thoroughfare). In 1915 Daphnes saw its first African American resident when Ethel Mudd arrived from Mobile with her daughter Lucille to live with her family upon her husband's death; she would later become an influential civil rights leader in Birmingham. However, most black residents were stillborn or moved away during World War II because much of Jefferson County was off limits to civilians due to wartime restrictions on travel and property ownership by Axis forces occupiers.
