Cullman, Alabama is a town of over 27,000 people that has been known for its coffee. The first coffee plantation in Cullman was founded in 1851 and the town became known as the Coffee Capital of the World. In 1916 Cullman was chosen to be the headquarters for the newly created International Coffee Union. Today Cullman is home to many businesses that specialize in coffee including Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, The Roasters at Cullman University, and most recently Joe's Café which opened in 2018. The first coffee beans were grown on a farm near present-day Cullman. In 1851 an American named John Wesley Hardesty purchased land east of Cullman and began growing coffee. By 1861 Hardesty had increased his acreage to 12 acres and he started importing Brazilian beans from Brazil. He also built a mill on his property which processed 1,500 pounds of ground coffee per day. In 1865 Hardesty sold his property to Joshua Slocum who continued to grow and process coffee until 1893 when he died due to illness. In 1916 Clyde Avant bought Hardesty's entire interest in the mill and decided to make it into a café chain called Joes Café Industries Incorporated (JCII). JCII operated throughout Alabama until 1948 when they moved their operations interstate to Nashville TN after being acquired by JW Marriott Company motel fame.JCII continues on as part of Marriott Corporation today with two locations in Tennessee (one near Chattanooga) along with several cafés throughout North America

Cullman is a small town in the northwestern corner of Alabama. It was once a thriving community with mills, farms, and churches. But today Cullman is only a ghost town. The last person to live there was born in 1925, and the last resident died in 1984. The town's decline began when the local mill closed down in the early 1990s. Today, there are no mills left in Cullman, and most of the residents have either moved away or died off from lack of opportunity or disease. The few remaining residents are mostly retirees who use their homes as vacation rentals or for weekend visits by tourists. Even though it is located close to several larger cities, Cullman has never seen much growth or development outside of its own small population. This may be due to its location on an old military base which used to provide jobs but now provides very little income and limited access to transportation. As a result, many people have decided that life here is too expensive or uncomfortable for them and they have all gone out of business completely. Despite being one of America's poorest communities, Cullman still holds onto some vestiges of its past: It has two churches (one dating back to 1871), two schools (one public and one private), and a single grocery store that remains open even though it does not generate any revenue anymore. And despite having few resources available to it (most locals rely exclusively on federal government assistance), people continue to visit Cullman for nostalgic reasons alone: Its history makes it one of the most photographed places in Alabama!
