The history of shooters in Cullman, Alabama can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area was first populated by Native Americans and until recently, shootings were a common occurrence. In fact, it is estimated that up to 90% of all gun deaths in the United States are due to accidents or suicides. This led to the development of shooting ranges and rifles in Cullman over time. One of the earliest shooters in Cullman was Judge John Hargrave who settled there in 1801. He became known for his prowess with a rifle and developed a method for target hunting called “Hargrave” shooting which he used on deer and other game outlying his farmstead. One of Judge Hargrave’s descendants, Captain James Hargrave, founded the town post office in 1825 which soon became an important center for shotgunning and rifle shooting activity. Captain Hargrave also donated land at what is now downtown Cullman for a public park which was completed in 1851. Today, downtown is home to severalhistoric buildings including the old jail and firehouse as well as many businesses and restaurants. Gunshot residue testing began operations in Cullman back in 1984 after a local sheriff’s deputy died from gunshot wounds caused by an accidental discharge from his revolver while performing security duty outside his home. At first, test results were inconclusive but over time it has become increasingly clear that exposure to lead or other chemicals can cause serious health problems if not treated properly. As such, law enforcement officers have long been required to get professional training on how to clean their firearms before returning them into service. Cullman, Alabama is a town in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,568 at the 2010 census. Cullman is home to the Cullman Air National Guard Base and the Cullman-Randolph Regional Airport. The area that now comprises Cullman was first settled by English colonists in 1736. The present town was organized as a village in 1871. It became an incorporated city in 1907. On December 3, 1927, it merged with two other cities—Mobile and Selma—to form Mobile County. In 1959, Mobile County seceded from Mobile County and formed its own government; Cullman remained within Butler County until that time. The current mayor of Cullman is Donnie Epps. In 1821, General James Wilkinson discovered oil near what would become Cullman when he drove his army into what is now Butler County on May 4th of that year while marching through the area to attack Creek Indians living along the Tennessee River Valley (now eastern Montgomery County). North of today's downtown Cullmann was then part of Creek Nation territory which included much of modern-day Baldwin County including Jonesboro and parts of Selma and Marshall counties north of Atlantaga A group led by Andrew Cunningham set up camp on some low ground east of today's intersection of University Boulevard and Old Hwy 20 about 1 mile south-southeast ofpresent day Creek Road (Upper Alabama Rd) where they drilled for oilbearing rocks beginning September 12th 1821 . After several days' exploration their well failed to produce any oil but did report finding sandstone ore over 6 feet thick . This initial discovery led to Cunningham & Co.'s continued operations at this location known as "Crowhole" until1824 when they abandoned all operations due to high expenses associated with operating such a large venture with only a small amount remaining in treasury after costs had increased 400%! On November 8th, 1830 Dr John Handcart leased land northeast/southwest sideof present day crescent moon road between US 27 & US 65 & began construction thereof as “Black Water” Wellsite surveyor’s office..Dr John Handcart leased land from Moorehead Ala., above Lowndes Bluff on Red Clay Fork tributary Apalachicola River from Elijah Wimbley Sept 7 1830 for $6 per acre payable annually plus interest @6% per annum…….. handcart soon realized that if creek could be diverted so water could be brought up this bluff so too might be gold or other valuable minerals…handcart ordered Peterbilt boat built Aug 30 1830reduced cost $620….this boat became known as Blackwater Boat or Sea Girt Boat….. early maps showsteading place name Clinch Point although creek draining diroutherly almost 2 miles below hill…. hand cart operated black water well 9/30/1830 thru 10/3/1831& minor repairs done here during this time including building assay lab Oct 15 1830…………….. well produced 13 barrels og crude oil each day Mar 31st 1832……………. production ceased Apr 25th 1833 because weather conditions got bad so pumps were turned off……….well closed Dec 22nd 1833 after producing 350 barrels og oil daily

The town was founded by General John Cullman on a tract of land he purchased from the British in 1796. After serving as a military officer during the Mexican-American War and being mustered out of the military in 1848, Cullman began to develop his land into an agricultural community. In 1892, Cullman became one of seven towns affected by a devastating tornado that struck Alabama that year. Many residents were killed or injured and many homes were destroyed. The town rebuilt quickly and continued to grow until 1955 when it merged with nearby Dothan to form Cullman-Dothan City.
