The United States Army has been present in Cullman, Alabama since 1864. The town was the site of the Battle of Cullman Station, one of the bloodiest engagements during the American Civil War. In 1898, Cullman became part of the newly formed Alabama statehood. In 1907, a local grocery store decided to send a gift to the U.S. military stationed in nearby Fort Knox. They sent an artillery ballista and mortar donated by Mr. and Mrs. John Witherspoon from Birmingham, Alabama. These gifts ended up becoming quite popular with servicemen and their families over time! Cullman is a small town in Alabama, located about seventy-five miles east of Birmingham. The community was founded by James Cullman on October 3, 1819. It became a town on May 15, 1871. At the time of its incorporation, Cullman had a population of just over one hundred people. In 1906, Cullman became the county seat for Jefferson County and remained so until 1959 when Mobile was incorporated into the county. Since then, Cullman has been the only municipality in Jefferson County. The townsite that now comprises Cullman was first laid out by James Cullman in 1819 as part of a land grant given to him by Governor John Cushing. At the time, it consisted of two square miles (5 km²) and had a total population of around fifty people. In 1830, following William Ladd's purchase of some adjacent land from James Cullman and others in what is now Mobile County, new boundaries were established for this area which included what are now parts of both Jefferson and Baldwin counties. This 1 square mile (2 km²) parcel of land comprised all that is now present-day Cullmann Township along with much smaller tracts surrounding it including those within present day Pike and Butler counties as well as eastern Walton County (now Tallahassee). The township was organized on October 3rd, 1841 under the name "Fulton" after Elijah Fulton who donated 640 acres (25 ha) to form it from portions of Butler and Pike counties respectively. By 1870 however, most residents had moved away from the original township due to various factors such as malaria problems brought about by being close to rice paddies or Seminole River Valley plantations where crop yields were high enough to support large numbers of people but not so great that malaria could thrive; also agricultural production improved significantly thanks to increased irrigation techniques which allowed farmers to grow corn instead of rice while still maintaining access to these valuable resources during droughts or other difficulties periodicals at this time record describing life at home with family members living near rivers when they crossed In 1901 census data indicates that there were just 78 citizens living in "Fulton", down from 524 enumerated in 1881; nonetheless property values had increased slightly through boom times prior to American entry into World War I (#1 cotton textile industry), decline associated with prohibition era #2 alcohol industry & return post-WWII prosperity growth associated with postwar baby boomers Thanks again mostly white Anglo married men & their families... electricity available only after hours during dry spell caused frustration among many rural black males who would have liked more than one outlet per house
