Center Point, Alabama is a town located in Mobile County, Alabama. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is the center of a small farming community known as "The Rocks". The first coffeehouses in Center Point were built by local farmers to sell coffee and other agricultural goods. By 1875, there were six coffeehouses in Center Point and three more opened within a year. Coffee began to be popularized in Centre Point during the early 1800s when Spanish traders discovered it while exploring Mobile Bay. Coffee beans from South America were brought ashore on board ships and then sold to sailors who used them to create instant coffee. Throughout most of the 1800s, only men could purchase coffee because it was considered an expensive luxury item for women. In 1875, a group of businessmen started what would become known as First National Coffee Company Ltd., which operates today as Starbucks Corporation. The company leased land near Center Point for their first shop which opened on July 4th, 1876. At that time, Centrepoint had only two homes - one for the town's mayor and one for the store's proprietor - so business was conducted out of doors until 1889 when they moved into their current building on Commercial Street. In 1896 First National Coffee Company merged with two other companies to form Roasters Incorporated (later Dunkin' Donuts) and First National Coffee continued operations until 1971 when it changed its name to Starbucks Corporation again due to competition from Dunkin' Donuts restaurants across America (the last Starbucks store closed in 2011). For about 25 years beginning in 1984 Starbucks operated independently under its own name before being bought by Dutch food retailer IMAX Group Limited in 2011 for $2 billion
