Center Point was founded in 1836 by John C. Maynard and James Fenton. They named the town after the point of geographic center for the area, which they located on the Mobile River. The first store in Center Point was opened in 1838. By 1840, there were six stores in Center Point with a population of just over 100 people. The economy of Center Point was based around agriculture until the early 20th century when oil exploration began to take off in the area and industry began to develop. In 1919,CenterPoint merged with nearby Tuscaloosa to form what is now known as Alabama Power Company (APCo). APCo would continue to grow and expand its operations into new markets throughout southeastern Alabama until it closed its doors in 1990. Today, CenterPoint is a ghost town that remains mostly unoccupied due to a lack of interest from developers or businesses looking to re-open the property. However, there are some remnants of its past including a small museum which traces CenterPoint's history back to 1836 and an old train depot which has been converted into apartments.
The city of Centre Point, Alabama was founded in 1836 by Captain John C. Chickering and his wife 1800 miles from Mobile, Alabama. The Chickering's were the first white settlers in what is now Centre Point. Colonel James H. Hardenburg donated land to the city and named it after himself in 1841. The town grew rapidly and soon had a school, jail, post office, and six churches. In 1851 the town was chartered as a township by Judge Augustus A. Fuller and it continued to grow until it reached its present size of over 100 blocks square. In 1907 Centre Point became an incorporated municipality with a population of over 1,000 people under the leadership of Mayor J.B."C" Morton
