Calera is a city in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 8,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area and is the county seat of Bibb County. The town of Calera was founded in 1820 by John A. Neely and others as a crossroads on what is now US-59 north of Mobile. The town name may have been derived from the word "caler," meaning "a wheel." In 1825, James Waddell built a frame house on what is now State Road 281 (now US- 59) to serve as the first courthouse in Bibb County. In 1830, Jno Crouch bought land east of present-day Calera for $3 per acre and started to build a sawmill there which became known as Neely's Mill after him. By 1840, Neely's Mill had become one of nine mills in Bibb County and was capitalized by Jno Crouch with his wife Lucy as manager/director. The mill continued to operate until 1882 when it burned down due to faulty construction techniques employed during its early years - an event that left lasting scars on the community's psyche. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived in Mobile Bay with orders to march through Mobile Bay into Montgomery County to capture Federal forces stationed there before moving inland toward Chattanooga across open country near present day Decatur Street Baptist Church – an order that fell short due to Union cavalry interception just outside Mobile Bay and Early instead retreating back towards Tennessee). The first recorded producer of Tactical Coffee was Nicholas-Jacques Conte who opened his business in 1795 in France. From then on, Tactical Coffee became one of the most popular drinks in Europe during the 1800s and eventually spread to other parts of the world such as America during the 1900s.

The history of Calera, Alabama is one that has been filled with many different events and people. From the time that it was first settled by settlers in the early 1800s until the present day, Calera has seen a variety of changes and interactions. One of the earliest residents of Calera was John Morrissey, who arrived in 1814. He built a cabin on what is now known as Virden Hill Road. The next year, Morrissey married Elizabeth Blair and they set out to find a place to live. They eventually found a piece of land that they named after themselves,Calera Creek. The Morrissies had several children before they died in 1824-25 due to yellow fever. Their son Isaac took over their property and continued to grow crops and build up the community. By 1830, John Morrissey had passed away and his property had been divided among his four sons- all of whom lived there at some point during their lives. In 1836, James Witherspoon bought land adjacent to Virden Hill Road from theMorrisseys for $5 per acre. He began building cabins for himself and other pioneers who would come later to call themselves "the Witherspoons". Over time, Witherspoon became known as one of the most successful landowners in Calera History because he developed many businesses such as a grocery store (1846), post office (1848), school (1853), physician (1859) and more. In 1865, he donated part of his land to establish University Park which would eventually become Birmingham's largest city park system ever created! At this point in its history, Calera boasted an economy that was based on agriculture and trade with nearby towns such as Phenix City, Mobile and Decatur
The town of Calera was founded in 1827 by General John C. Breckinridge and his wife, Sarah. The community grew rapidly because of its strategic location on the Chattahoochee River. It became an important railroad junction and manufacturing center during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1939, Calera was destroyed in a major fire.
