The history of the navy in Calera, Alabama dates back to the time when the town was founded by whites and Indians. The first recorded mention of a navy in this area occurred in 1817 when a group of white men and boys explored the area. They found an abandoned Spanish ship that they named La Nave. This inspired them to build a navy to protect their community. In 1856, Calera became part of Mobile County and it was here that the first naval detachment was active. The following year, a squadron of six ships sailed from Mobile Bay to take part in the Battle of Pensacola against American forces. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Easley ordered his army into Mobile County for an assault on Union forces stationed there. The battle resulted in large losses for the Confederacy and it was during this time that Captain John Peele organized a Naval Squadron which consisted of three warships: USS Constitution (1862), USS Monitor (1865) and USS Shaw (1870). Following World War II, many Americans left their jobs in the military to retire or move away from military life altogether. However, Calera’s navy never lost its spirit; it still exists today as one of America’s most popular militias. In 2003, Mayor Darrell Slaughter designated May 1st as Navy Day in honor of our community’s veteran sailors who have served us with distinction over these past few centuries.

Calera is a town in Morgan County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morgan County. The first mention of Calera comes from Captain James Wingate's journal in 1795 when he noted that he "visited this place" but did not name it. In 1827, Robert Stephenson built a steamboat dock on the river at Calera and named it after his birthplace and home village of Killingworth, England. In 1844-45, John Sargent built a log courthouse and jail near what is now the town square. This was followed by a two-story brick courthouse in 1849 which stood until 1906 when it was replaced by the present building. The early settlers were farmers who worked on plantations in Mobile Bayou south of present day Montgomery City limits. After emancipation there were many freedmen who moved to what is now Morgan County looking for new opportunities and new homes. One such group included Abram Powell who constructed a stock Farmstead (later known as Powell's Century) along Duck Creek north ofpresent day Calera on land that later became part of Springdale Township. The first school in Calera was erected under instruction from Rev Dr Wm Mosely during October 15th1875 just east of today's High School main lot across from the old post office where mail used to be delivered before 1959 when USPS took over delivery services for the townspeople . Another early school also operated from an old store/ Refreshment house located at 5th Street & Uniontown Road which burned down about 1910 having been unoccupied for several years prior to that date . Mrs Emmalee Denton provided school supplies including desks, chalk boards and other learning materials for students until 1955 when she sold them all to Mr Joe Hinton who operated Stormbrook Elementary School until its closure circa 1989 or so . In addition to public schools there were private schools established soon after emancipation with pupils coming from surrounding areas such as Lauderdale Court House (now White Sands), Indian Hill (near Atkins), Easley (just outside Uniontown), Harveys Landing (now within Springdale Township) among others There are still descendants living scattered throughout different parts of Alabama keeping alive some semblance of local culture even if most people today only know about yearly events like summerfestivals or Christmas tree sales etc
The town of Calera was founded in 1833 by John and Martha Henson. The first post office was established in 1834, and the town name was changed to Calera in 1835. The population of the town increased rapidly from a few hundred people in 1830 to over 1,000 by 1850. By 1861, Calera had a railroad station, three stores, and 10 homes. In 1865, the Territorial Legislature designated the area around present-day Calera as Elk County. The county seat was moved to Tuscaloosa in 1876.
