The first settlers in what is now Calera were white citizens of Mobile who arrived there during the Rogue River Campaign of 1846 as part of General Andrew Jackson's effort to drive out Native Americans from Alabama and Georgia. The history of Calera begins with two early pioneers: John Aitken and his family who left Mobile for Athens in 1828; and James Denton who came to Athens in 1830 as part of a group that included Benjamin Fenton,Jr., John Hardin, John Matson and others. Aitken married Sarah Hargrave on April 12th, 1829 at Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church while they resided at 512 Rufus Street in Mobile Bayou Denton also immigrated to Alabama but did not settle until he bought 2 acres (0.8 km2) on which he built a cabin called "Athens" on November 14th, 1830 from Wm Bynum Ltd.. This initial settler had come downriver from Tennessee looking for land that he could purchase through fur trading trips across the bayou system – something that was still possible after Indian Removal Act had taken place six years earlier. Moore, who fought in the Mexican-American War and afterwards served as a justice of the peace in nearby Mobile. After the war, John S.Moore returned to Alabama and began to settle land around his home on Red Mountain Creek. He erected a log cabin and named it Calera after his home state of Georgia. In 1856, Captain Moore's widow sold their farm to General Wofford Sherman and his family. over time, many other families moved into Calera including Intermountain Railway Company employees, doctors, lawyers, and farmers from the surrounding area. Calera became known for its annual cotton harvest which took place in late May or early June each year and was one of the largest agricultural events in the region. The crop produced about two million pounds of cotton which helped support local businesses and households during this time period. Cotton production declined during World War II due to factors such as increased competition from other crops however it has been revived in recent years through modern farming techniques
In the early 1800s, Calera was a small town in Alabama. It was located on the Tensaw River and had a population of around 100 people. In 1819, Calera became known as the "heart of cotton country" because of its importance in the production of cotton. The town remained relatively unchanged until after World War II when it experienced significant growth due to the expansion of agriculture in Alabama and new technology related to cotton production. Today, Calera is an important community with a population of over 2,500 people and is home to several businesses including a gas station and grocery store.
