The first military detachment in Calera was an artillery battery organized by Captain John Sibley in November 1881. During World War II, the Army post garrisoned at Cedar Hill served as a command center for all operations along the Alabama-Tennessee border. In addition, some local businesses began producing munitions for the war effort; one such business is still in operation today known as “Munitions Mill” on east end of Main Street near Highway 231 north of Cedar Hill Cemetery). After World War II ended, many servicemen returned home and their families left Calera to live elsewhere; however, there are still few reminders of what happened during those times here at Cedar Hill! Today, army personnel continue to serve here actively with periodic rotations through town as part of annual exercises such as 3-day maneuvers or joint training drills conducted with other service branches around this area (e.g., Marines use Fort Benning while sailors use Naval Station Pensacola). These days there are also several small businesses that have been sustaining since before then like Pharmacy which has been open since 1927 (and currently employs 8 people) and Curling Rink which has been open since 1916 (and currently employs 10 people).
