The United States Air Force was established in 1947 and it has continued to grow since then. The USAF provides aerial transportation for national defense, operations and missions around the world. The USAF operates over 30 different bases throughout the country and employs more than 52,000 people. One of the most important aspects of the USAF is its gift history. It began with providing support for America'sOperation Overlord in 1944-1945 and continues through today's mission of protecting America from threats both near and far. During the Korean War, the USAF activated three fighter squadrons at Calera and these were quickly absorbed into the main Jet Fighter Wing. Inactivated in 1966, the wing returned to active duty in 1975 as a unit of Tactical Air Command (TAC). From 1978-1981, CALERA served as home of Headquarters Fifteenth Air Force and then moved to Okinawa where it remained until its closure in 1992. It was reactivated in 1994 as part of newly created Ninth Air Force after Hickok Field was closed. The 9th AF flew F-15Cs and E-3s from Elmendorf AFB until its closure in 2006. Calera is a small town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The educational institutions in Calera are locally operated public schools and private high schools. The town was named for George Washington Calera, an early settler. It began as a farming community with about 85 people in 1875. By 1905, the number of residents had increased to 232 and by 1920 it had grown to 553. The post office was established in 1885 and served the community until 1935. The first school in Calera opened on November 6, 1875, with ten students. In 1925, the first high school opened for students grades 9 through 12; it continued to be called "Calera High" until 1959 when it became "Bibb County High School". In 1965-1966 BCHS merged with the nearby Tuskegee Institute which had been renamed "Alabama State College" after statehood in 1957. Bibb County then changed its name back to Calera during that same year due to confusion over two similar towns' names having different dates of establishment - one being 1865 while the other 1926! As time passed more businesses and homes were built around what is now downtown Calera; however some original buildings still remain including: Gadsden Depot (now used as a library), hardware store/grocery store (now defunct), bank (now closed), post office (1885-1935) and Waffle House restaurant (opened 1977). Downtown also features several churches including Baptist services held at First Baptist Church beginning in 1919 and Methodist services held at First Methodist Church from 1922-1963 before moving inside Mount Zion Baptist Church from 1970-2006 where they continue today! In addition to local government there are several agencies that provide essential services such as firefighting, police protection and ambulance service; all within easy reach of downtown Calera thanks to Bibb County's many Businesses which have their own fleets of vehicles providing these Needed Services!

Calera is the largest city in Bibb County, Alabama. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 1990 and it is projected to exceed 150,000 by 2020. The city was founded in 1892 by J.M. Overstreet and his wife Anna Mae Overstreet as a small farming community on the White River. By 1974, Calera had become one of the most important industrial cities in Alabama with a large aerospace industry and other manufacturing businesses. The decline of the aerospace industry has resulted in a loss of jobs for many residents, but it has also helped to preserve some of the downtown areas which are now known for their architecture and history.
The town of Calera was founded in 1819 by James W. Brown and his brother, John. The community grew rapidly, and in 1832 it became the county seat of Colbert County. The town continued to grow, and in 1856 it incorporated as a city. By 1890, the city had a population of 507 people. In 1907, the city lost its charter and became an unincorporated community again.
