The Birmingham National Guard was activated on September 9th, 1941. It served for three years and was then disbanded. The first unit to be mobilized in the city of Birmingham was the 119th Infantry Regiment which arrived on October 3rd, 1941. The regiment had been raised from men who were drafted into the military during World War II. Many of these guys had fought in the Battle of Midway and other engagements in the Pacific Theater. The 119th Infantry Regiment was also activated at a time when Alabama’s economy was weak because many soldiers were needed to help fight in Europe as part of America’s defense effort. This gave Local businesses an opportunity to sell items such as uniforms and equipment to the troops. One local business even put together a “Gift Casket” for members of the guard that included food, cigarettes, money, theater tickets, and other gear. After mobilization ended on December 15th, 1941 there wasn’t much else that could be done until 1942 when new units were sent from states like Georgia and New York that had entered into war with Japan. These units would soon become known as Operation Tomahawk which targeted Japanese installations throughout Southeast Asia. In 1945 local companies decided it was time for another gift for members of the Birmingham National Guard so they organized a golf tournament held at Legion Field where all types of gifts could be bought including uniforms, gear, vehicles or anything else related to military service or patriotism! After winning this event several times over shop owners started selling items such as tanks and trucks along with flags and medals!

Another type of National Guard is The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). ROTC helps officers become qualified leaders and professionals in our society by teaching them how to handle stressors during service hours and leading mock drills on various professional levels such as law enforcement or business administration. Additionally, ROTC provides opportunities for young men and women from lowincome families to explore fields such as business Administration or criminal justice so that they may have some hope for becoming officers themselves one day.
