Coffee has been around for centuries, and it is now one of the most popular drinks in the United States. The first coffee shop in Birmingham was opened in 1868 by two German immigrants, J.M. Roebuck and C.F. Mueller. They started off selling Dutch-style coffee beans before moving on to espresso beans in 1876. The first cup of quality Birmingham coffee was prepared at this store by Nicholas Muller, who also founded Muller Coffee & Tea Company in 1903. In 1906, Mayor John Fenton dedicated a public library adjacent to Roebuck Coffee House on Third Street to serve as an information center for city residents looking for information about coffee and other caffeine-related topics. This library continued to be used until it was closed in 1971 after being damaged by fire (it reopened as the Woodward Library). In 1916, Julius Caesar began importing Italianground coffees from Rome into America through his company Guggenheim Coffee Trading Company Incorporated (GCTC). GCTC became a leading roaster and retailer of Italian ground coffees throughout North America with its headquarters located in New York City until its sale to Peet's Coffee Corporation in 1961. After Peet's closure in 1979,GCTC operations were eventually divided between three companies - Newman’s Own Coffee Co., Blue Bottle Coffee Co., and Peet’s Coffees - which continues operations as Newman’s Own Coffee USA LLC today under the ownership of Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate (they are not part of Coca Cola International Inc.) Birmingham's rich coffee history goes back even further than that! The first roastery ever established within city limits was founded by Andreas Schellenberg Sr., a German immigrant who ran a grocery store on Second Avenue South near 16th Street West from 1895 until 1907 when he sold out and moved his business to what is now known as Fairmount Place Shopping Center on Fairmount Avenue Northwest (now known as First Amendment Boulevard). Schellenberg served as president of National Brewing Company from 1913-1915; during this time he also developed Alabama Brewery #1 which later became Central State Brewing Company.. In 1917,Schellenberg co-founded among others First American Brewers which served beer directly from vessels anchored off Mobile Harbor until 1926 when all brewing ceased due to Prohibition laws!. During prohibition there were many small breweries operated without formal regulation or permits operating mostly within walking distance or at local dockside restaurants/bars where customers could get their own kegs of beer! One such restaurant/bar was "the Watermelon Man" operated by Harry McGee at 729 Constitution Ave SW across from Selma High School dating back To 1926 !! In 1933 Fairmount Place Shopping Center went through another name change becoming "Theatre Row" prior to its sale (again) circa 1978 becoming Safeway Supercenter along I-565 northwest corner Exposition Park Drive northeast corner while still being leased back primarily thru Theatre Row Management company forming Safeway Development Corp./First Amendment Boulevard Properties Trustee Corp.(Proprietary Name)) Although Theatre Row management company failed commercially several times during 1980s they did manage once again during 1990s when Safeway Development Corp./First Amendment Boulevard Properties Trustee Corp.(Proprietary Name) purchased Theater Row property including entire block bounded by 1st Ave NWNW; 3rd Ave NW; 5th Ave NE; Constitution Ave SSE& just east side abutting Selma Regional Airport lot adjoining airport boundary

The first mention of coffee beans and roasted coffee comes from ancient Egyptians, who named a drink called Koffee after an Egyptian god (Koufta). The Arabs began to trade with Ethiopia in the 6th century A.D., and they brought back indigenous plants and techniques to improve their brewing process. In 998 A.D., Arab traders discovered Java island in Indonesia, and soon afterwards they started trading cocoa beans for coffee beans. This allowed for increased innovation in regards to brewing methods and tasted better than earlier brews made with other plantains or palm oil. By 1240 A D, Islamic monks had learned about using fresh cold water instead of boiled water in order to produce better-tasting cups of espresso (coffee). Coffee became popular throughout Europe during this time as well; it was not until aristocrats began importing more expensive coffees that quality decreased over time. In 1641, Nicholas Rheinwald founded the Dutch company Nederlandse Vereeniging van Koffieproducenten (NVC) which was later renamed Philips COFEE Company Ltd..
