In addition, prominent citizens such as Andrew Johnson were frequent visitors to Birmingham for lunch or dinner during these times. The late 19th century saw significant changes in Birmingham's economy; however, coffee remained a key part of that growth story. In 1916, John Galt acquired Dobson’s Coffee House and began making roasted beans at his own millstones location on Union Avenue near downtown. Galt had strong ties to Buena Vista Coffee Company – one of America’s leading producers of fine Roasted Arabica Beans – and he wanted to bring their quality products into Alabama along with his own high-quality roastingsesame year he added grinding powerto his millstones operation at Broadview Place near downtown (renamed Galt & Sons Merryweather Mill).
