The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long-standing deployment history in Birmingham, Alabama. In October 1942 Lieutenant Colonel James Peebles became Commanding Officer (CO) RAF C Flight at RAF Jackson followingthe retirement of Captain Laddington.. From then untilactivation in September 1945,. all UK squadrons operating out of Okinawa were united under NATO command under British operational control while HQ Far East Air Area Headquarters remained headquartered at Osaka airport ..[Inactivated] The first true jet bomber squadron formed within USAAF was established on April 20th 1944 when Republic F-94 Starfire pilot LtCol Gregg Sheppard activated VF-426 “The slingers” flying experimental jet bombing missions over Japan ..[Inactivated] Republic Consolidated B-24 Liberator / Boeing 3672 Stratojet Bomber Squadron 1st Wing stationed at Selfridge NAS flew strategic bombing missions over Germany starting from May 1945 .[Activated 1 Apr 44] On 2 Apr 1944 VF-426 "The Slingers" activated off USS Coral Sea vicinity Yap Island headed generally SEP 3rd Escort Group being redesignated 4Apr44 as 516th Bombardment Wing (Heavy) VP-217 "Dolphin". Aircraft flown became: RB model 12B/C/N; SB model 18N/K; TB model 24N/Q.. Allocated Operational Control here 19Apr44 with 436th Bombardment Wing reassigned VP-217 "Dolphin" 9May45 [Activated 15 May 45].
