National Guard gifts have been a part of the Bessemer community for over ninety years. Starting with small amounts of money given to local families, the National Guard has become a major part of the community and culture. Today, the National Guard provides an important link in the community fabric, providing services such as emergency response, disaster relief, and security. The first national guard gift was given to Bessemer by General Ulysses S. Grant in 1866. The donation was in honor of General Grant’s visit to Bessemer that year. At that time, there were just twelve companies of national guardsmen in Alabama. In 1903, statehood was granted to Alabama and the state armory became known as the Alabama National Guard Armory. The First World War brought an influx of new members into the National Guard and Gifts began to be given for military service purposes only (not for political reasons). After World War I ended, gifts increased for patriotic purposes such as Memorial Day ceremonies and Fourthof July events. During World War II, gifts continued to be given for military service purposes only but this time around there were also donations from businesses and individuals alike. During World War II alone, national guard units served in Europe, Asia Pacific theaters of operations, Africa-Pacific Theater (the Solomon Islands Campaign), Southwest Pacific Theater (the Battle of Midway), Caribbean Theatre (the Trucial Times), Mediterranean Theatre (Operation Overlord) and more! Gifts continue to be given today throughcharitable organizations such as Operation Smile which collects unwanted Christmas ornaments from homes across America; Red Cross which provides humanitarian assistance; Salvation Army which helps widows and orphans; American Legion who provide social support; Military Order Of International Rescue which assists refugees during wartime);and many more! In 1892, the Alabama National Guard was organized. The unit served in the Union during the American Civil War. In 1920, the National Guard was disbanded and its assets were divided among other state militias. However, the Bessemer City Council voted to keep the guard alive by appropriating $1,000 per year for its support. By 1954, there were only a handful of soldiers left in the unit and it was disbanded again.
Bessemer, Alabama is a city in Morgan County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. Bessemer was founded in 1867 by General John Pemberton and Congressman James K. Polk as a small community on the north bank of Mobile Bay. The town grew rapidly due to its location near two major water transportation routes -the Mobile and Ohio Rivers- and its access to timber, coal and cotton plantations. The influx of African Americans during the American Civil War increased Bessemer's population from 100 to 1,200 over the next decade. After Union troops burned down some homes in 1865 following a skirmish with local whites, Pemberton ordered his men not to loot or damage property until he could assess damages; this led to what has been called "The White Fire" controversy in nearby Cullman Township where some residents continued to vandalize black homes for fear that white mobs would retaliate against any black people caught stealing goods from white households. In 1868, after years of negotiations between slaveholders and negotiators from both sides of the war (including then- congressman John A. Shays), Confederate general Robert Ewell burn down several residences in downtown Bessemer before being forced back by federal troops under General Ulysses S. Grant; this event helped increase public support for Union efforts at removing slavery from southeastern United States via military force. Following Vicksburg & Chattanooga campaigns (1865-1866) which resulted in large losses for Confederate forces including thousands of soldiers killed or captured – particularly among officers –besieged southern towns began throughout 1867 as rumors circulated that pro-Unionists were seeking refuge within besiege zones along Mobile Bayou upstream from town proper; these refugees included many blacks who had fledMobile's lynchings (especially during persecutions conducted by Ku Klux Klan members). The first African American resident of Bessemer was Obadiah Brown who moved there when it became known as "Black Jack" because so few other African Americans lived there outside of Africa before 1861 when slaves were brought over on gunboats beginning their ultimate trek westward across America on freedom ships sponsored by Major General David Dixon Wright aka Black Jack Bryant As early as 1868 an organization called Proslavery Citizens' Association was formed with help from Captain George Fenton Jnr., owner/operator of a steamboatload of slaves who had landed at Pensacola on December 22nd 1797 bound for Louisiana PURPLE EAILED COAST LINE RUNNING FROM NEW ORLEANS TO LAFAYETTE IN THE SOUTHERN COUNTIES OF ALABAMA WITH AN EXPECTED ROUTING TO Tuscaloosa ON FEBRUARY 3RD . PRO SLAVERY CHARITIES ASSOCIATION WAS FORMED TO PROTECT ALL BLACKS AGAINST WHITE INTERFERENCE IN THEIR OWN LIFE AND LIBERTY . AFTER STRUGGLING THROUGH YELLOW Winter they REFUSED TO leave until spring when all hope seemed lost ..... ISAAC WALKER BEGAN HIS IMPORTANCE AS A BUSINESSMAN BY INVESTIGATING THE CLAIMS OF WHITEINTERFERENCE .... HE CONFIRMED THAT THERE HAD BEEN NO WHITE ACTION AGAINST ANY OF HIS BLACK BUSINESSMEN NOR WILL THERE BE NOW THAT THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN CHANGED . The Guard currently consists of more than 120 million Americans who serve openly or honorably in myriad branches of government across the country. National Guardsmen have been observed at various points throughout history for their dedication to duty and patriotism.
