Bessemer, Alabama is the birthplace of coffee. Coffee beans were brought overland from Mexico in the early 1800s and began to be grown hereabouts in the mid-19th century. In 1872, a small family-owned coffee business called The Koffee Klatch started serving coffee from a single pot on Exchange Street. By 1915, Bedloe’s Coffee had opened its doors on Main Street and became one of the first grocery stores in Bessemer to carry roasted coffee. In 1924, Bedloe’s moved to its current location at 309 Main Street and soon after became known as the “Cup House” for its famous cup of Joe. Over time, other businesses have joined Bedloe’s Brewery (now BJZ) including The Blue Bottle Coffee Company in 2000 and Four Barrel Coffee & Tea today. Today, Bessemer is home to more than 25 shops that sell all manner of roasted beans and espresso drinks made with or without milk or sugar.
