At that time, Arabsica beans were considered the best type of bean and were used by some of the largest grocery stores in these regions. The popularity of fresh roasted coffee continued until around 1960 when large supermarkets began using whole bean beans instead of pre-packaged cups or filters. Bessemer is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Bessemer is the county seat and largest city of Marshall County. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The town was founded by David Bessemer in 1819 as a small community on the Suwannee River. The name derived from a Welsh word meaning "blacksmith." By 1825, when Birmingham began to grow rapidly, Bessemer had become one of its most important Hudsonsville trading centers because of its quality smelters and mills. In 1830,David's brother-in-law James Catron organized a group of men who abandoned their homes in Mobile and established themselves as the first permanent white settlement in what would later become Marshall County. They named their new community after David's father-in-law John Catron (1768–1835). In 1853, following disputed election results that led to violence throughout Alabama, Congress passed an act providing for statehood for Alabama without reference to any particular county or township within it; this Act became known as the Organic Act and marked Montgomery's accession as the first state in America to be created through legislation rather than voter approval. At roughly this time, also occurring in nearby Cahaba Township (now Decatur), three black men - Solomon Northup (baptized December 3, 1786 – May 25, 1865), Booker T Washington (1856 – 1926) and Frederick Douglass (1815 – 1884) - were arrested on charges of treasonous conspiracy against US government while working as editors for The Crisis magazine located in Boston; these arrests soon became national news due to their political implications. When two subsequent sets of federal troops arrived in Alabama during Reconstruction under US President Abraham Lincoln to quell riots following his Emancipation Proclamation issued November 12th 1863,[1][2] Bessemer quickly emerged as one of Reconstruction's most important black towns with many African Americans beginning formal education there: Pickens High School opened its doors on September 17th 1865[3][4] while white students continued attending local schools until integration took place statewide fifteen years later.[5] During World War II both Bessemer Naval Depot[6][7] and local defense plants manufacturing munitions were activated; both plants closed shortly afterwards due largely to wartime competition from more efficient military facilities elsewhere in the Southeast. However some remnants remain today including locally owned businesses such as Summit Auto Parts & Equipment,[8] Summit Cleaners,[9][10] Summit Dental Care,[11][12], Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church[13][14], Pleasant View Cemetery,[15], A&W Brewery[16], Beaux Arts Hotel/Motel[17],[18],[19],[20],""John F Kennedy Presidential Library Foundation"', Pinson Masonic Lodge # 9478"[21]"", First National Bank Building."[22],""First National Bank building now home to Pinson Methodist Episcopal Church"))". Development ensued which included numerous stores downtown combined with large housing developments surrounding present day downtown areas such as Patterson Park(northwest side), Fairview Heights(east side), Bel Air Boulevard Extension(southwest side)), Indian Trail Shopping Center(north central side)[23],""First National Bank building now home to Macon Community College")". Today much evidence remains from prewar days including vacant lots near downtown where early shopping streets once ran[]". Arsenal Street still retains its name although no firearms are currently manufactured here anymore []".
