The Bessemer Coast Guard Station has been a part of the Alabama Department of Homeland Security since 1997. The station provides law enforcement and security services to the town of Bessemer and its surroundings.
Bessemer is a small town located in hand-me-down territory of Montgomery, Alabama. The population was 4,463 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The area that now makes up Bessemer was first settled by English colonists in 1795.The name "Bessemer" comes from French and means "a place where metal is smelted." The first steel production took place here in 1825.Today, Bessemer's economy revolves around manufacturing and services such as sales and marketing for aluminum products, construction materials, truck parts and software development. In addition to its renowned steelmaking industry, Bessemer has also become home to many historically significant institutions including: the Carnegie Library (1908), Methodist Episcopal Church (1891), Tuskegee Institute (1902), and the African American Historical Museum (1983).
The Coast Guard has been a part of the United States since 1790. The Coast Guard was created to protect the nation’s coasts from pirates and other smugglers. In 1942, the Coast Guard became a service branch of the United States Army. In 1990, the Coast Guard merged with the Department of Homeland Security to become one agency called Customs and Border Protection (CBP). CBP is responsible for enforcement of America’s borders and guarding against smuggling activities. In 2001, the Coast Guard celebrated its centennial year. Throughout this century, the Coast Guard has made significant contributions to American society. For example, in 1941, they helped stop World War II by providing assistance to allied forces fighting onshore in Europe. Additionally, during this time period, they also helped improve communication between inland communities and coastal ones by setting up radio towers and patrols along our coastline. Today, there are over 11 thousand active duty members of the Coast Guardsman who patrol our nation’s coasts both land and sea. This number only includes those stationed at ports of entry- most live aboard ships or on shore stations across America’s oceans and seas. Each day they work tirelessly to keep our country safe from harm while upholding our traditions as a Nation founded upon freedom and democracy!

Bessemer is a town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,728 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1827 by General John C. Bessemer and named for him. It became an incorporated municipality in 1868 and was renamed to Bessemer in 1907. Bessemer is located on the east bank of the Ohio River, about south of downtown Mobile and north of Huntsville. It is bordered by Uptown Mobile to the north and west, Gadsden to the southeast, Enterprise to the southwest, and Prichard to the east. According to the 2010 census, Bessemer has a total area of , of which (or 97%) is land and (or 3%) is water.[1] The history of Bessemer begins with General John C. Bessemer who settled there in 1827 when he escaped from Fort Smith Arkansas during their Indian war effort. He built a log cabin on a small peninsula on which he named his new settlement "Bessemer." The first post office opened in December 1827 and remained open until it closed on October 15, 1865 because there were only five residents living in that area at that time! In 1860, following Alabama's admission into the Union as a state, beseech began receiving mail from outside ofAlabama through Postmaster General Amos Kendall[2]. Today's First National Bank building was built around this time near what is now Main Street which led directly into what is today Fourth Avenue! From here mail would be sent all over central Alabama via stagecoach or wagon road before being delivered by horse or buggy all up through Decatur! This service ended with prohibitionist Andrew Johnson's inauguration as president on April 12th 1865 so no more letters could be sent! However some small packages still arrived for those living within our borders until after 1870 when delivery ceased altogether due to lack of funds.[3] By 1870 only 8 people lived within town limits[4], but rapid growth ensued due to new industrial development such as sawmills,[5],[6],[7],[8],[9],[10]; textile mills; transportation facilities; logging forests; and agricultural production resulting in many businesses opening up including: A&P grocery store operated by Grocerymens Warehouse Co.; JG Coffee & Tea Store operated by George Jenkinson; Lumber Yard operated by Matson Bros.; Bootlegger's Brewery operated under license from Baltimore Brewing Company; Masonic Lodge No 769 had their first meeting here on November 17th 1861; Methodist Episcopal Church served as church throughout much of this period also serving as cemetery for both settlers and natives killed during this time period

In 1846, Bessemer became the capital of Alabama Statehood, and soon afterward developed into one of the most powerful cities in the state. By 1860, Bessemer had become an important commercial center with a population of over 100,000 people. The city was devastated by fire in 1865, but quickly rebuilt and became one of Alabama's leading industrial towns. Bessemer also boasted one ofAlabama's first metropolitan areas, which contributed to its stature as an important cultural and political center for much of the 19th century.
