The United States Naval Academy in Auburn, Alabama, is home to one of the largest and most diverse Navy fleets in the world. The academy has a rich history that has been represented by sailors and friends of the navy since its founding in 1802. Navy ships have been stationed at Auburn since 1898 when they were arrived from Boston. Out of the original 12 vessels, only six remain afloat today- USS Constitution (1898), USS Maine (1912), USS Alabama (1915), USS Utah (1941), and USS Porter (1945). Auburn, Alabama is a small town in the south central portion of Alabama. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Auburn is the home of Auburn University and has been called "The Birthplace of American Football." It was also where first organized football was played in America. The town site for what is now Auburn was first inhabited by the Creek Indians. The area that would become Auburn was granted to James Hogg in 1837 as part of the Treaty of Mobile. In 1836, John Lightfoot purchased land near present day Auburn from Hogg. The townsite name probably comes from lightfoot's horse farm which stood on what is now Seminary Road. In 1847, Abraham Baldwin donated land east of present day Seminary Road to form what would become Baldwin County. In1868, James K. Polk became president and gave his land west ofSeminary Road to form Polk County as well. Lewis Cass became governor and passed an act authorizing construction of a school in present-day Auburn and it opened in 1870; this school served as the prototype for bothAlabama State Normal School (now UA) and Alabama Agricultural College (now ALA). In 1881, when local sharecroppers began to defeat cotton planters’ prices for their crops through organization into unions, other farmers formed similar unions throughout the Deep South, challenging prices offered by plantation owners and driving them out of business. This type of strike led to increased agricultural production throughout Alabama but especially in southernmost counties such as those around Auburn which were protected from price competition by their location on navigable waterways entailing access to affordable markets outside their county boundaries
