Auburn, Alabama is a small city in central Alabama. The population was 21,736 at the 2000 census. It is the largest city and county seat of Marshall County, Alabama. Auburn's history goes back to 1824 when it was founded as a town by General John C. Hindman. In 1831, Auburn became the capital of Marshall County after being moved from Mobile. Over time, other cities were added to the county including Muscle Shoals (1937), Tuscaloosa (1948), and Decatur (1961). The county Seat moved from Auburn in 1931 to Hoover in 1982 due to population growth within Marshall County. In 1890, two brothers named George Washington Carver started a grocery store in what is now downtown Auburn which later became known as Carver's Market Place. After serving for several years they opened their own store on May 2nd, 1892 which became known as Carver's Cheese Store and remained open until 1919 when it closed due to World War I dietary restrictions. Upon its closure, the cheese store left an important legacy on Auburn that still exists today - a variety of fresh foods are sold here including eggs, waterfowl hunting trophies, locally made breads etcetera from around the world brought into town for sale at various times throughout the week during Farmer's Market season
