Atmore, Alabama is a small town in south central Alabama and is the county seat of Atmore County. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It lies about 25 miles (40 km) east of Birmingham and 30 miles (48 km) north-northwest of Huntsville. The first settlers in what is now Atmore were farmers who arrived in the late 18th century. A post office was established here in 1835, and by 1860 the town had a population of just over 100 people. In 1871, local businessmen bought 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land to build a new cotton plantation which became known as "The Cotton Plantation". The following year the town had a population of 300 people. By 1900, Atmore had reached its present size with a population of 2,500 people. In 1926–1928 three tornado outbreaks touched down in southernAlabama: one on October 20th 26 near Eufaula; one on November 3rd 28 near Selma; and one on December 12th 27 near Dothan During these outbreaks damage occurred to many homes, including some that still stand today. Many residents lost their lives or were injured during these tornadoes which caused extensive damage across much of rural southeasternAlabama In 1933 an interstate highway was built through southeast Alabama from Mobile to Montgomery cutting off access to this area from northeast Georgia This created several problems for Atmore as it coincided with massive farming operations out west which eliminated much demand for cotton goods here In 1941 John F Kennedy was elected President and at his inauguration he dedicated part of his speech to "the great cause our fathers fought for: keep America open." Atmore, Alabama is a town in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. Atmore was founded in 1836 by General John C. Marshall and settlers from Georgia. The town's first post office was established in 1840. In 1845, Atmore became the county seat of Sumter County. The cotton plantations of the area were abandoned during the American Civil War and most of the land changed hands after that time. In 1865, part of Atmore was incorporated as the city of Atmore by a vote of its citizens; it remained an unincorporated community until 1972 when it became a municipality underverts within Sumter County boundaries. The Battle for Atlanta took place on July 2nd, 1864 and ended with Federal victory over Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Heath at Peachtree Road Bridge across Chattahoochee River near what is now known as Overton Park in downtown Atlanta; this event is generally considered to be one of the key turning points in Ulysses S Grant's military career and ultimate successful campaign to restore Union control over Georgia and its slaves following the Civil War.
