Atmore, Alabama is a small town located in the lower end of Baldwin County, Alabama. It is bounded on the north by Marshall County and on the east by Perry County. The population was 2,097 as of 2010. Atmore is known for its apple orchards and peach orchards. The first settlers in Atmore were farmers who came from Georgia in 1821. In 1824, they built a cabin on the current site of Atmore Village. The first post office was established in 1828. By 1830, there were fourteen homes in Atmore and six stores. In 1840, James Hinton founded an agricultural company that became Hinton-Wright Agricultural Company. Hinton also built a mill at Atmore Village which produced flour, meal, cottonseed oil and tobacco for local markets. In 1865, Robert Mears purchased land at present-day Atmore Village from Elisha Peachey to build his farmstead there. The family ran the business until it merged with another farming enterprise in 1907 to become Litton Farms Incorporated (Litton & Peachey). After World War II ended hostilities between the United States and Japan, many Japanese refugees moved into Litton Farms Incorporated during that time period; these people are sometimes referred to as "Japanese Americans." In 1956, Jock Mahoney began operating what is now called The Mahoney Store at present-day Atmore Village after purchasing land there from his father-in-law Joe Mahoney Sr.. Jock's store served as a support system for local farms during droughts and other tough times during the early 1960s when commodity prices were low due to quotas set by President John F Kennedy's Agriculture Department because of concerns over high levels of livestock production across America's rural areas without corresponding increases in food availability or farmer incomes statewide. The town has experienced some growth over recent years with new businesses opening up such as Gassi’s Italian Restaurant which opened up in early 2017 followed by Stroud’s Auto Parts & Equipment which opened up late last year just before Christmas bringing much needed economic stability to our area following years of drought conditions throughout most of 2018 season

Atmore was founded by the Washington family in 1819. The first white settler at Atmore was John Washington, who arrived in 1818. The area that is now Atmore was part of the Creek Nation and was considered a refuge for Cherokee and other Native American people during the 1800s. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson moved his army through eastern Alabama to prevent an attack on Jacksonville by Major General Edmund Kirby Smith. While passing through Atmore, Jackson impressed the Washington family with his military skills and they donated land to establish their town. By 1840, Atmore had a population of 100 residents and there were three stores and one blacksmith shop in town. In 1851, construction began on the first courthouse in Alabama. The building served as the seat of government for all of southern Alabama from 1851 until it was replaced by the current courthouse in 1905. The towns growth continued during Reconstruction (1868-1971). After Reconstruction ended, many African Americans moved into non-white areas ofAlabama while whites returned to power. This led to tension between races which continues until today. In 1880, a post office called White Sulphur Springs opened up in modern day Montgomery; this post office helped solidify ties between Montgomery and Atmore even further than they had before. In 1907, when automobiles became popular, businesses started using them to transportation goods betweenAtmoreand Montgomery; this allowed more people living outside ofAtmoreto interact with those living within it and learn about its culture and history
