After World War II, military personnel were drafted into the Marine Corps and their families moved away from coastal towns such as Atmore and Gainesville for extended periods of time. This left behind communities like Atmore which relied on naval service for economic stability and education opportunities for their children. In 1951, Congress passed legislation authorizing the President to award grants to states based on need rather than population size or wealth; this led to Alabama being awarded its own naval base at Pensacola Naval Base in 1969. Since then, Naval Station Atmore has been home to numerous warships including USS Enterprise (CVN 65), USS Nitobe (KAO 53) and USS Montgomery Blair (LHD 2).
