Atmore is a small town in Alabama, located in the Limestone County seat of Atmore. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live here were the Creek Indians who settled here in 1814. The first white man to come to Atmore was James Atmore who platted this area in 1827. He named it after his home town of Atmore, England. The first post office was established in 1828 and soon became known as "Atmore." In 1840, J.B. Cobb founded a cotton gin here and it still operates today as Cobb's Cotton Gin Company Incorporated. In 1865, General John Custer fought during the American Civil War here against Confederate forces under General Robert Evers (now known as Jackson). After the war, many men from this area returned to their homes and businesses that had been destroyed by war and reconstruction. Georgia native Waddell Coleman bought land near what is now downtown Atmore in 1901 and started farming there until he sold it to local resident Otha Whitehead in 1912 for $1 million dollars ($ when purchasing prices were higher). During World War II Atmarmer residents helped out with production of munitions at nearby Muscle Shoals Naval Weapons Plant (now National Defense University) while their townspeople prayed for Allied victory over Nazi Germany from inside their homes or on balconies across the street from Government House on Broad Street (). After World War II ended, most families went back into retirement until 1990 when new development began around downtown which has since drawn many more people to Atmore specifically because of its proximity to major shopping centers such as Moulton Mall and Enterprise Square mall (). Today, Downtown ATMORE continues to be one of the most vibrant places in all of Huntsville/Decatur County!
