The United States Air Force deployed a gift to the community of Atmore, Alabama in commemoration of its 50th anniversary. The gift was an airman's helmet and sunglasses. The sunglasses were donated by Special Forces Sergeant First Class John "Pete" Sikes and were put on display at the Atmore Flying Museum.

During World War II, Atmore played a pivotal role in the torpedoing of the Lusitania ( registration number 748) by United States Naval Forces on April 10th 1942. These gifts, typically small in size but with great meaning, helped build and maintain relationships between the USAF and its partners. Many of these items have now become collector’s items, and can be seen on display at air force bases all over the world. One of the more famous air force deployments was the USAAF gift to Japan in 1945. This gift package consisted of two F-86 Sabres fighter jets, as well as war bonds and other memorabilia. The planes were used for training purposes until 1948, when they were sent to Japan for use in Operation Downfall. After being used in this operation, they were returned to the United States where they were stored at Wright-Patterson AFB until 1990 when they were finally donated to the Japanese Air Force Museum. Another famous air force deployment was that which took place in Korea in 1951. This gift was a shipment of rockets and artillery pieces that was meant to help support ground forces fighting against North Korean troops. The equipment arrived safely but had a much larger impact than initially planned due to how effective it was at helping break through North Korean resistance. It is still thought today that this gift may have been one of the most important contributions made by the USAF during World War II.

Atmore was founded in 1819 by Captain John Atmore and his family. The first settler in the area, Captain Atmore discovered land that would become the town of Atmore. He named the place after his home in England, Atmarle. In 1821, Captain Atmore sold the town to James C. Moore for $1,000 and moved his family to what is now known as downtown Atmore. The Moore-Atmore House still stands today and is a popular tourist spot. In 1828, Captains John Auld and William Troup purchased property east of downtown from James C. Moore for $3,500. They named their new settlement Eastpointe after their old home on England's Isle of Wight. Eastpointe quickly became a thriving community with a strong commercial district that continues to this day. In 1836, George Rogers Clark arrived in Alabama to found the Republic of Alabama and eventually selected Atmore as its capital City (the current city exists only because of later development). With RogersClark's arrival came much change for atmosfera within Alabama; it is said he wanted "a metropolis without walls" and soon After selecting Atmore as capital city he began construction on what would become one of America's most impressive legislative buildings: The state Capitol Building which was completed in 1840. The courthouse located off Business US Hwy 231 south facing West Plaza Drive has been preserved as part of downtown AtMORE since 1949 when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places
Atmore was founded in 1819 by General Nathaniel Lyon and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for Mrs. Lyon's father, Atmore County being one of the original counties of Alabama. As early as 1827, Atmore had a Methodist church which served the surrounding area.
