Athens, Alabama is a small town located in Decatur County, Alabama. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Athens is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area and is home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The first settlers in Athens were white men from Georgia who arrived in 1819. They named their new community after the ancient Greek city of Athens. By 1830, there were more than 100 people living in Athens. The town was platted out in 1831 and quickly became a center for trade and commerce with neighboring towns such as Cullman, Decatur, and Tuscaloosa. In 1836, Athens became the county seat of Decatur County after it was incorporated into that county. During the Civil War, Athens served as a Union military encampment on opposite sides of the river until 1865 when it switched support to the Confederate side. After Reconstruction ended in America's south during the late 1800s, many African Americans migrated to Athens seeking opportunities that would not exist outside of urban areas while most whites returned to live within their own communities or left for other parts of America altogether. By 1945, only 2 percent of Athenians remained African American while over 90 percent had ancestry from European Americans or those from other countries who had come to North America during its post-war period of openness and opportunity following World War Iolationism

Athanasia, or Athens as it was known before the American occupation, was a small town located in Clarke County, Alabama. The town had been founded by Greek colonists in 1816 and named after the ancient city of Athens. The first settlers were Baptists and Methodists who arrived from Georgia. In 1825, Athens became a county seat under the name of Selma. From 1836 to 1861, Athens was an important stop on the Union Pacific Railroad's route from Omaha to Mobile. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Athens sided with the Confederate States of America and fell to Confederate forces. After the war ended, much of what remained of Athens was destroyed by Union troops. Reconstruction followed and many businesses closed due to lack of business opportunities. However, some residents began to rebuild and renamed their town Athene after Athena (the patron goddess of wisdom). The community thrived until around 1970 when it experienced a surge in population due to Interstate 85 construction that impacted transportation options in central Alabama. As a result of this increase in traffic and limited economic opportunity, many people abandoned Athanasia and its dwindling population soon after. Since then there has been little activity at Athanasia except for occasional visits by descendants of original settlers who live nearby in Selma or Montgomery proper; most visitors come for cultural reasons only. Despite this lackadaisical attitude towards life at Athanasia since its abandonment more than seventy years ago, there are still some remnants from those earlier days including churches dating back to 1816 which can be seen perched atop hills overlooking downtown Athenia; a library built in 1905 which is still open;BTW: I'm not sure if anyone knows how old this one actually is...
