From the mid 1800s until the early 21st century, Anniston, Alabama was a hotbed of law enforcement activity. The Anniston Police Department has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. The department was first organized in 1837, and initially consisted of six officers. In 1907, the department became an independent unit and was renamed the Anniston Police Department. The department currently contains approximately 190 officers and is responsible for policing all of Anne Arundel County.
Anniston, Alabama is a small town in the Great Lakes region of south central Alabama. The population was 9,546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Colbert County. Anniston is located on US-280, about 15 minutes west of Birmingham and 35 minutes east of Montgomery. The first permanent settler in what is now Anniston was Captain John Hays who built a log cabin on the current site in 1819. A post office called Haysville was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. At that time, most of this area became part of Colbert County. The first schoolhouse in what is now Anniston was built around 1840 by Mr. Martin Jarrell as a one-room school for children from neighboring townships. In 1851, James Fenton constructed an academy which served as the primary educational institution for African American students until it closed its doors in 1966 due to budgetary constraints. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered all black soldiers to leave Mobile Bay before its fall because he felt they constituted a hostile force against his army. This order led to many African Americans being forced into labor or working off their military service behind enemy lines and resulted in some fatalities among them including Mrs.(Shelby) McFarlane who lost her son Private William McFarlane during battle near Fort Pickens on April 12th 1861 while serving with Company D3 United States Colored Troops under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Ewing’s command.. After Appomattox Court martial decision ordering all Confederate officers and men unconditionally surrendered ended up freeing most slaves within six months most blacks left Mobile for good leaving behind communities like Anniston where they continued to live as citizens until after World War II when they were forcibly welcomed back into white households through various legal means including discriminatory housing policies enacted during Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal era
